Large Ghalamkari Hand Block Prints Made In Iran

A beautiful very large hand block printed Ghalamkari from Isfahan in Iran. Natural dyes block printed onto a good medium to heavy weight cotton. These decorative cloths can be used as bed covers, table cloths, throws & wall art.

These Ghalamkari prints are printed by brothers who are Ghalamkari artisans that come from a family with a 400 year history in the trade.

IIsfahan central Iran, has been known for their craftsmanship for centuries. 

Famous all over the world for their handmade rugs, they are also famous for their hand block print cloths, using a traditional method of printing on fabrics which are used as table cloths, bedcovers & wall hangings.  

The art in the Farsi language is called Ghalamkari which translates to hand drawing. Using hand blocks & printing on cotton fabrics by using a different hand carved block of wood for each colour & design. Skilled artisans using pear wood will manually carve wood pieces of about 30cm by 30cm. Colourful natural dyes are used which are extracted from different types of flowers, fruits & vegetables. Once the cotton cloth has been printed they are then washed in cold water before being spread out in the sun to dry. They are all washable in cold water when necessary .
