Hand Made Silk On Cotton Uzbek Bukhara Suzani.

Hand made silk embroidery on cotton fabric, original Uzbek Bukhara Suzani. This is a beautiful traditional piece usually made by young girls or their mothers to be added to their wedding dowry. 

Suzanis are traditional amongst all the Turkic groups but more so in Central Asia, the original Uzbek ones are amongst the most famous & sought after. 

During the Soviet period the traditional making of Suzani was controlled by the state & very suppressed, & much of the age old secrets & techniques were lost. The origins of the Suzani art is believed to be have begun in the Fergana Valley & then spread across Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan & Tajikistan. The word 'Suzani' is derived from the Persian language & means needle & needlework 'Suzanikari'.

In great condition age unknown, decorated with embroidery’s depicting pomegranates which are a symbol of ‘Barrakah’ which means abundance. The pomegranate is believed to be a fruit from heaven as mentioned in the Quran so for all Turkic people it is believed that a fruit of heaven will bring with it an abundance in all good things.

This Suzani would look fabulous professionally framed.
