Otto Keramik Large Ceramic Bison West German Pottery Fat Lava

Otto Gerharz, in 1951 as operations manager at Ruscha Keramik invented what we refer to today as " Fat Lava Glaze ". He set up his own ceramic house " Otto Keramik " in 1964.

Sadly Otto Gerharz Senior passed away a few years ago, but his son Otto Junior continues his legacy still producing original designs by his father. Still using the original molds & original glazes.

Otto Keramik bulls are handcrafted in Rheinbach, Germany, using the finest clay sourced from the renowned Westerwald region. A meticulous process starts with selecting & processing this premium clay, ensuring its purity & quality. It's then transformed into a smooth slip through precise filtration.

The slip is carefully poured into specially designed plaster molds, shaping the bull while removing excess moisture. After drying, the bull is removed carefully, then meticulously any remaining clay seams are cut away by hand . A final touch of sponging results in a silky-smooth surface.

To add a creative flair, we apply carefully selected glazes, including striking black Fat Lava accents in specific areas. The bulls are then fired in kilns at 1040°C, where the magic happens as the glazes fuse with the clay.

Each Otto Keramik bull is a true piece of art-pottery, showcasing the beauty of Westerwald clay and the craftsmanship that goes into each piece.

Every single Otto Keramik piece is hand finished & coloured, no 2 pieces are ever the same. The ceramic pieces which are fat lava glazed have a natural bubble that can sometimes pop this is a natural occurrence with the fat lava glaze.
